    Washington, Jun 14 (PTI) Ahead of the sixth International Day of Yoga, a yoga university in the US has announced that it will launch of an online master''s programme in the subject.

    Vivekananda Yoga University (VaYU) in California is the world’s first yoga university outside India.

    “In following the pioneering tradition set by Swami Vivekananda who brought yoga to the West in 1893, we are bringing a vision of a holistic approach to yoga with its applications supported by modern scientific research,” said Dr H R Nagendra, chairman, Board of Trustees of VaYU.

    California Bureau of Private & Postsecondary Education has provisionally approved VaYU to operate as a university and offer the MS (Yoga) degree, said Nagendra during a virtual launch ceremony.

    Nagendra is also the Chancellor of SVYASA University, the world’s first yoga research university in Bengaluru, which he founded in 2002.

    The university said that applications for fall 2020 semester are open with the first day of classes starting on August 24.

    The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on June 21 since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014.

    Los Angeles:  Vivekananda Yoga University (VaYU), the world’s first university outside India  devoted to yoga education and research, has launched their  Online Master of Science (Yoga) Program. Applications for the  Fall 2020 semester for the university are open with the classes beginning on August 24, 2020.

    Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Chairman, Board of Trustees of VaYU, said, “In following the pioneering tradition set by Swami Vivekananda who brought yoga to the West in 1893, we are bringing a vision of holistic approach to yoga with its applications supported by modern scientific research. I am pleased that the California Bureau of Private & Postsecondary Education has  provisionally approved VaYU to operate as a university and offer the MS (Yoga) degree.” Dr. Nagendra is also the Chancellor of S-VYASA (Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthan) University, the world’s first yoga research university in Bengaluru, India, which he founded in 2002.

    The VaYU Online MS (Yoga) is a cohort-based four-semesters program with 30 credits. The program is designed for working professionals as well as those  seeking an advanced knowledge of yoga.  Each academic year, in the 15th week of the fall semester, students will attend  a week-long Personal Training Program (PTP) to get  hands-on training in  asanas, kriya (purification techniques), pranayama and dhyana, etc. The PTP will be offered at the main campus in Los Angeles. Depending on  student interest and faculty availability, PTP could be offered  through satellite campuses across North America, and, at the SVYASA campus in Bengaluru and Singapore.

    The minimum eligibility for this program is a four-year degree from any accredited college or university in the USA. Equivalent degrees from other countries are also acceptable. No prior exposure to yoga is required.

    Provost Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, author, researcher and  faculty at the Department of Cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Fellow of the American Heart Association, said “VaYU faculty is top-notch, highly-accomplished, and world renowned. All of them have PhDs or MDs in yoga or related fields with a combined 250 years of teaching and research experience. They have directed 84 doctoral dissertations and over 400 master’s theses.”

    Murali Venkatrao, VaYU Vice President of Curriculum & Infrastructure Development, Director of Yoga Teacher Training at the Ananda Institute of Living Yoga, and a professional at Microsoft for more than 25 years, said “VaYU curriculum focuses on three learning objectives: the science of how and why yoga works; art of practicing the yogic techniques deeply; and,  treating common diseases using yoga as  an evidence based approach. We will train you in conducting applied research on yogic techniques. We will also teach you about  applying yogic methodology to interpersonal relationships and management in your personal and professional lives”.

    LOS ANGELES, Calif.  Vivekananda Yoga University (VaYU) based here in Southern California, has become the world’s first yoga university outside India. At an inaugural ceremony on June 14, the university announced that it will have an online masters program on yoga.

    Dr. H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor of SVYASA University, the world’s first ever university dedicated to yoga research, will serve as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of VaYU. Speaking at the event he said, “In following the pioneering tradition set by Swami Vivekananda who brought yoga to the West in 1893, we are bringing a vision of a holistic approach to yoga with its applications supported by modern scientific research.”

    The California Bureau of Private & Postsecondary Education, he said, has provisionally approved VaYU to operate as a university and offer the MS (Yoga) degree.

    The launch received messages of support from the yoga fraternity including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living Foundation and Baba Ramdev of Patanjali Yogpeeth, according to a press release.

    The university said that applications for fall 2020 semester are open with the first day of classes starting on Aug. 24. The program requires the completion of 24 credits plus a 6-credit research. Students, VaYU said, will attend a week-long personal training program which will be offered at sites based on enrolment.

    Others who spoke at the event included Provost Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, an Indian American faculty member at the Department of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles; and leaders, supporters and benefactors from the popular VYASA-LA chapter that conducts yoga classes around Southern California, including Babubhai Gandhi and Bhikhubhai Patel of the Tarsadia Foundation.

    A yoga university will soon be established in California to impart education and promote research about the ancient Indian practice, a yoga guru from India has said.

    Yoga became famous in the US and its studios have come up in different parts of the country. The ancient practice has become immensely popular over the past few years due to the worldwide celebration of International Yoga Day.

    World’s first yoga university outside India would begin its post-graduation courses in the not so distant future in the US alongside inquire about in the old Indian practice and the affirmations for it will start in April, university authorities said on Saturday.

    The Vivekananda Yoga University (VAYU) has built up its underlying grounds in Los Angeles with a financial limit of USD 5 million.

    The Vivekananda Yoga University (VAYU) has established its initial campus in Los Angeles with a budget of $5 million.

    World’s first yoga university outside India would start its post graduation course later this year in the US along with research in the ancient Indian practice and the admissions for it will begin in April, university officials said on Saturday.
