B.N.Hebbar has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Utrecht (Netherlands), an honorary Doctor  of  Divinity  (D.D.), and a Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) from the University of South Africa. He has taught at GWU for two and a half decades. He received the Bender Award in 2006 for Excellence-in-Education from GWU. He has lectured extensively on the histories, arts, and literatures of the eastern religions particularly Buddhism, Hinduism, and Shinto. Until recently, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Buddhist Association of America (IBAA) and served as its Executive Vice-President. He has received awards from the Washington DC area Cambodian Buddhist and Korean Buddhist communities as well as from the Indian Hindu community. He has authored three books and written numerous articles in professional academic journals.
