Title: Yoga Therapy makes the Grade - and the Grade is A+

Abstract: Dr. Fishman will review the currently demonstrated effective yoga therapy for scoliosis, osteoporosis and rotator cuff syndrome: For scoliosis, he will review the successful work with adults and children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, and also the integrative medical techniques using botulinum toxin and yoga together.

Yoga's efficacy in reversing osteoporosis involves key principles, and some adaptation of classical yoga a la Iyengar. Although his current study isn't yet published the previous two studies make the points. The NIH supported study of yoga for rotator cuff syndrome is perhaps the most spectacular and the best proven at this juncture.

Understanding the dynamics and teaching methods was a fascinating road which we'll take you on. These three are just examples of the many solid contributions yoga is making to medical practice and people's well-being. His group's small successes are intended to lay down the gauntlet, to challenge you to improve on what has been done so far.

In over two decades of practice, Dr. Loren Fishman has gained an international reputation as a back-pain specialist, a diagnostician and a pioneer in the treatment of many disorders, including piriformis syndrome, scoliosis, osteoporosis and rotator cuff syndrome. He has authored more than 90 academic journal articles and 10 books. His most recent book is Healing Yoga: Proven Postures to Treat 20 Common Ailments.

A past president of the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Fishman is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at Columbia Medical School. He has recently published an innovative book about electrodiagnostic testing, published by Springer, and the book on yoga cures, Healing Yoga, W.W. Norton January, 2015. His books on osteoarthritis and osteoporosis guide the workshops he teaches nationally and internationally.

Dr. Fishman studied yoga in India with BKS Iyengar, uses it in his rehabilitation practice and has written extensively about yoga as an adjunct to medical treatment.
